This was a piece I pencilled and inked for a competition being held by Platinum Comics. I hired someone to color and letter it as I wasn’t happy with the way my attempts had panned out.

I was going through the files on my computer and came across these old pages. I’ve always liked the way they came out. I think I was hitting a stylistic path that I should’ve pursued. I’ve always planned on revisiting it.
These were sample pages based off a script from the very 90′s Force Works comic from Marvel.

These Memories Can’t Wait

I haven’t been the most productive of artists for a while. There’re a variety of reasons why, mostly work related. Rather than dwell on that I thought I would write about artists who got me into drawing.
While growing up I was turned off by fine arts mostly because of Pollock. I couldn’t get into his whole deconstructing art thing. I couldn’t understand why if someone could make beautiful pictures they would choose not to. This, and my brother led me into comics. Since I predated the comic shop I was at the mercy of the local grocery store and what they would carry from month to month.
The earliest comics I remember buying with my own money were copies of a Star Wars comic drawn by Ron Frenz. It had a painted cover by Tom Palmer which was what hooked me.
The other book was Uncanny X-Men. I believe the title was “Kitty’s Fairy Tale”. It was drawn by the late Dave Cockrum. Colossus’ sister Ilyana wanted a bed time story which Kitty provided. It was populated by fairy tale versions of everyone.
I remember really liking the Star Wars issue but Cockrum’s X-Men just grabbed me and didn’t let go. Many a day was passed with my tracing characters from the world he created.
After that I found my first local comic shop and was able to choose from a much wider selection. I was fortunate enough to get into comics with Simonson on Thor and Byrne on the Fantastic Four. I also learned to appreciate and love the fine arts, once I realized that it wasn’t all like Pollock.

Brigade

As you may or may not know, for reasons I can’t even explain, I’m a fan of Rob Liefeld’s Brigade. I just think it felt into the so-bad-it’s-good category. I have tons of sketches and doodles in my sketchbooks of the various characters in the team. I thought I would share with you an old one that I just came across the other day.
I’ve pulled it into Photoshop and have started playing with the sketch. If I like the way it comes out I’ll upload that file as well.

Portfolio preparation part II

So it doesn’t look like I’ll have anything to show at the con. I’m annoyed but what can you do? I don’t have a time machine so I cant go back and work harder or whatever. What I can do is keep on chugging along on these pages. I’m having fun with them and hope to have them done by the end of the month. I need to, as I’ve got a bunch of other things I want to jump on. That’s part of the problem I guess, I want to be able to do everything at once and that’s just impossible.

Anyways, I’ll still be attending the con, so if you see me, as always, please stop me and say hi.

It’s almost four in the morning and I’m pretty beat. However with NYCC in two days, I can’t go to bed as I’m working on samples to show the various publishers that are going to be there. Things are crazy for me as you can imagine. I hope to upload my pages sometime next week for you to look at.
